THIS ISSUE: DHS Sec. Mayorkas asks for $6.5 billion more to detain fewer illegal aliens while telling Congress the border is under control.
FRI, APR. 29thThis week, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas gave testimony in the House of Representatives. On Wednesday, he appeared before the House Appropriations Subcommittee to answer questions about the DHS 2023 budget request. He told the subcommittee that “we expect migration levels to increase” after Title 42 is lifted in May. The anticipated increase in illegal immigration is one of the reasons Mayorkas is requesting a $6.5 billion increase over the FY2022 budget for a total budget in FY2023 of $97.3 billion.DHS said last month that it expects to “encounter” 18,000 illegal border crossers a day (that’s 6.6 million a year!), more than doubling the current numbers.
Despite the expected tremendous increase in illegal immigration, DHS requested funding for 5,000 fewer beds than they have now (30,000). Clearly, Mayorkas has no intention of detaining the vast majority of those who cross the border illegally. The Biden Administration has released 756,000 illegal aliens into the U.S. since President Biden took office in 2021. This does not count the so-called known got aways, which is “an unlawful border crosser who is directly or indirectly observed making an unlawful entry into the United States.”
Mayorkas told Congress that there were 389,000 got aways at the southern border in FY2021. (Fox News reports that sources in CBP have said that there have been more than 300,000 gotaways already in FY2022 (FY is Oct. 1-Sept. 31).Mayorkas said DHS “will continue to enforce our immigration laws after Title 42 is lifted,” which is an audacious statement considering DHS at present is doing next to nothing to enforce immigration laws. The 20-page plan Mayorkas submitted on how DHS will deal with the massive new surge of illegal immigration reveals that it will “increase processing efficiency,” meaning releasing into the U.S. as quickly as possible virtually every illegal alien who makes a “credible fear” claim, who is part of a “family unit,” or who is an unaccompanied minor. Mayorkas is asking for Increased funds to transport these illegal aliens to the destination of choice within the U.S.The proceedings on Wednesday were mostly genial. Mayorkas is a former U.S. Attorney and former Director of USCIS. He is skilled at Congressional testimony and adept at deflecting difficult questions asked by members who don’t have sufficient knowledge about the complexities of immigration law. Republican members mainly pushed Mayorkas to explain how he would spend the requested funds, and border Democrat Henry Cuellar (D-Tex.), who has been very critical of Mayorkas’ handling of the border situation, thoroughly praised the Secretary’s performance.Thursday’s hearing before the House Judiciary Committee went much differently. Committee Republicans repeatedly confronted Mayorkas about illegal immigration, drug smuggling, cartel violence, and national security threats, while dismissing his repeated claims that the border was under “operation control.”Several of the most notable exchanges:
- Mayorkas refused to tell Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) how many, if any, of the 42 individuals encountered at the border who were on the terror watch list were released into the U.S., and if any still remain in the country.
- Mayorkas told Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) that, despite that fact that he knows some illegal aliens released into the U.S. will commit violent crimes, DHS will do nothing to apprehend and remove them until after those crimes occur.
- Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tex.) showed Mayorkas images of illegal aliens threatening border residents, migrants who have died on their journey to the U.S. border, a young girl branded by the cartels, and faces of Americans who have died from fentanyl overdoses. Roy tried to elicit some sympathy or sense of responsibility from Mayorkas, who refused to accept his policies have had any negative consequences.
- Democrat Greg Stanton (Ari.), who represents a border district, told Mayorkas in regard to ending Title 42, “Putting more pressure on a system that can’t handle it carries a significant risk of creating a full scale humanitarian crisis on American soil for which the White House and your department will be solely responsible.”
- In the tensest exchange of the day, Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) said his constituents believe that Mayorkas has “intentionally undermined the mission of the Department of Homeland Security” and they believe that Mayorkas has “committed treason.” A visibly shaken Mayorkas replied that he is “incredibly proud of his service this county.”
Receiving a lot of attention yesterday was the announcement that DHS has created a “Disinformation Governance Board.” The Washington Times’ Stephen Dinan reports, “In the immediate term, its focus will be on disinformation surrounding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and on the messaging smuggling groups are peddling to would-be illegal immigrants, the department said. But the broad scope of its purview and the appointment of [an avowed opponent of free speech] as its lead have raised questions about the board.”Indeed, many questions should be raised about how DHS will respond to those who criticize the disinformation and misinformation coming from the agency’s own Secretary.
